Nutmeg Detail
Nutmeg trees can reach a height of about 20 meters (65 feet). It takes 8 years to sow to bear fruit, 25 years to bloom, and the fruiting period is more than 60 years. The fruit is a pendulous drupe similar in appearance to an apricot. When fully ripe, it splits into two parts, showing a dark red aril, the nutmeg, surrounding a single shiny brown seed, the nutmeg. The pulp is eaten on the spot.
After harvesting, the nutmegs encased in the seed pods are transported to the pickling area, where the nutmegs are removed, flattened and dried. The nutmeg is gradually dried in the sun and turned twice a day for six to eight weeks. During this time, the nutmeg shrinks from its tough seed coat until the kernels rattle in the shell when shaken. The shell is then cracked open with a wooden stick to remove the nutmeg. Dried nutmeg is a taupe oval with a ribbed surface.
Nutmeg and mace contain 7% to 14% essential oil, the main constituents being pinene, camphene and dipentene. Nutmeg, when pressed, yields an approximately 24% to 30% fatty oil known as nutmeg butter or oil of nutmeg, the main ingredient of which is trimyristin. These oils are used as fragrances and carminatives, as well as to scent soaps and perfumes. An ointment made from nutmeg was used as an anti-irritant and to treat rheumatism.
Nutmeg, consumed in large quantities, is psychoactive and is said to have delirious and hallucinogenic effects. Nutmeg poisoning is rarely fatal but can cause seizures, heart palpitations, and pain. The name Nutmeg is also used in different countries for other fruits or seeds: Jamaica or gourd, Nutmeg, from Myristica mace (Annonaceae); Brazilian nutmeg from Cryptocarya moschata (Lauraceae); Laurelia aromatica (Atherospermataceae family) ) of Peruvian nutmeg.
